Getting Started

Introduction to the trip

Welcome to this exciting journey to Rohtang Pass and Lahaul! In this article, we will take you through a day trip from Manali during the lockdown. Join us as we explore the scenic beauty of Rohtang Pass, experience the impact of tourism, enter the mesmerizing land of Lahaul, and make impromptu decisions along the way.

Reason for being late

Unfortunately, our plan to catch the sunrise at Rohtang Pass didn’t go as expected. Due to a new government rule, we were unable to cross the Gulaba check post before 6 am. We had gotten up at 2 am without knowing about this regulation and reached Gulaba at 4 am. It was disheartening to miss the sunrise, but we were determined to make the most out of our trip.

New rule at Gulaba check post

A new rule had been introduced by the government, which required travelers to wait until 6 am to cross the Gulaba check post. This rule was put in place to manage the flow of tourists and ensure their safety. Despite the delay, we were eager to continue our journey and explore the beautiful landscapes that awaited us.

Journey to Rohtang Pass

Starting the journey from the hotel

Let us take you back to the beginning of our trip. We started our journey from the hotel, filled with excitement and anticipation for what lay ahead. Our goal was to reach Rohtang Pass and witness its breathtaking beauty.

Reaching Gulaba check post

As we approached the Gulaba check post, we encountered a line of cars waiting to cross. It was here that we learned about the new rule and the restriction on early entry. We patiently waited for the clock to strike 6 am, eager to continue our adventure.

Missed sunrise but still mesmerizing views

Although we missed the opportunity to witness the sunrise at Rohtang Pass, the views from Gulaba were still mesmerizing. The surrounding mountains, bathed in golden sunlight, created a picturesque scene that we couldn’t help but admire. Despite the setback, we remained positive and looked forward to the experiences that awaited us.

Arriving at the first check post of Rohtang

After crossing Gulaba, we finally arrived at the first check post of Rohtang Pass. We were amazed by the emptiness of the place, which starkly contrasted with our previous visit. The absence of crowds due to the impact of tourism during the pandemic had transformed the once bustling area into a serene and peaceful haven.

Observations about the emptiness and impact of tourism

The emptiness of Rohtang Pass left us with mixed feelings. While it was refreshing to experience the tranquility of the place, we couldn’t help but feel a tinge of sadness. The impact of the pandemic on tourism was evident, with many people and businesses being affected. We realized the importance of responsible tourism and the need to support local communities during these challenging times.

Visiting Lahaul

Bypassing Rohtang and entering Lahaul

Due to the closure of Rohtang Pass for tourists, we had to bypass it and enter Lahaul instead. It was an unexpected turn of events, but we embraced the opportunity to explore Lahaul during the lockdown.

Creating a receipt at Khoksar check post

To ensure smooth passage through Gulaba while returning, we had to create a receipt at the Khoksar check post. This receipt served as proof that we had entered Lahaul and were returning from there. It was a necessary step to comply with the regulations and avoid any fines.

Exploring Lahaul during the lockdown

As we ventured further into Lahaul, we were captivated by its natural beauty and charm. The landscapes were breathtaking, with towering mountains, lush green valleys, and glistening rivers. Despite the lockdown, Lahaul offered a magical escape from the chaos of the world.

Spotting Atal Tunnel on the way

During our journey, we had the opportunity to witness the Atal Tunnel, the longest high altitude road tunnel situated below Rohtang Pass. This remarkable engineering marvel, set to be inaugurated by our Prime Minister at the end of September, was a testament to human innovation and determination.

Heading towards Keylong and information about petrol pumps

Our next stop was Keylong, a village where we decided to have a meal and take a break. It was essential for us to refuel as well since Keylong was the last place before Ladakh with a petrol pump. We realized the importance of planning ahead, especially when it came to essential resources like fuel during long journeys.

Further Exploration

Stopping at Keylong for a meal

After a long and eventful journey, we decided to make a pit stop at Keylong to replenish our energy with a delicious meal. We savored the local cuisine and took some time to relax and soak in the surroundings.

Continuing the impromptu trip

As we resumed our journey, we found ourselves being drawn to the allure of exploration. Our trip had initially been planned as a day trip, but the spontaneity of the moment beckoned us to venture further into the unknown.

Planning to go to Jispa

Our original plan was to visit Jispa, a village located after Keylong, and then turn back. However, with the extra time on hand and the desire for more adventure, we decided to push forward and explore Jispa and its surroundings.

Considering the time and the birthday celebration

As time ticked away, we contemplated our options. It was an impromptu decision to extend our journey, but we had to consider the time and the celebration of a birthday. Balancing the desire for exploration with practicality, we made a decision that would allow us to cherish the moment while also ensuring a safe return.

Deciding to go a little further to Deepak Taal

With careful consideration, we decided to go a little further beyond Jispa. Our curiosity led us to Deepak Taal, a picturesque lake that offered a tranquil escape from the chaos of everyday life. It was the perfect destination to celebrate and create lasting memories.
